Ritesh-Aashish murder suspect flees police custody

Kantipur Report

BIRATNAGAR, Dec 5 - One of the suspects of the Ritesh-Aasish double murder case who was nabbed by the police in a village in Sunsari district has managed to escape from the Biratnagar Airport while being ferried to Kathmandu on Thursday evening.

A team of Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Crime Division had arrested suspect Birendra Kumar Pandit from Harinagar-5 in Sunsari district yesterday.

According to sources, Birendra was able to dodge the police team and run away just before the team boarded a plane to the capital.

The team led by Police Inspector Om Kunwar had been sent to Sunsari last week to apprehend suspects Birendra and Deepak Mahato. The duo had escaped from Kathmandu following the murder of Ritesh Rauniyar and Aashish Manandhar.

A police source at the Biratnagar Airport said that Birendra was not even handcuffed while being brought to the airport.

It has been learnt that only one sentry was present at the airport when Pandit escaped.

Morang and Sunsari police have confirmed Pandit's escape.

The police recovered the dead bodies of Ritesh Rauniyar and Aashish Manandhar, both 15-yr-old and residents of Tahachal, from a community forest at Thankot in the capital on November 26.

Rajendra Pandit, the prime suspect of the double murder, was arrested on November 27 and made public by the police yesterday. He has admitted to killing the two teenagers with the help of his two friends Birendra and Deepak Mahato over a minor dispute.
